The BLLP.info web site is a resource and forum for the Spanish and English narrative language projects involved in the OERI and NICHD funded project entitled "Biological and Behavioral Variation in the Language Development of Spanish Speaking Children" (David Francis, P.I., Aquiles Iglesias, Co-P.I., Jon Miller Co-P.I., Andrew Papanicolaou, Cp-P.I. and Panagiotis Simos, P.I.; NICHD 39521). This project enhances an existing Program Project grant (jointly funded by OERI and NICHD, David Francis, P.I.) by adding extensive oral language analyses and brain imaging to the child, teacher, home, family, school and community factors that can account for variability in literacy development in English Language Learners whose first language is Spanish.

Oral narrative language samples are currently being collected from Spanish speaking school age children from Texas and California in both Spanish and English. Analysis of the initial cross-sectional data set from 750 children, K- 3rd grade, is currently in process. Over the next three years 1,450 children will be tested twice a year to document longitudinal progress. The research group from Temple University is responsible for the transcription, coding, and analysis of Spanish language samples while the research group from Wisconsin are responsible for the same tasks with English language samples. Our initial objectives include implementing reliable transcription and coding schemes comparable across the two languages.
